Chapter 16

LUCAS

I've been up for forty hours and in bed for less than an hour when Gabby's ring tone wakes me.

I don't want to answer it. I let it go to voicemail, too tired to deal with the drama tonight.

It rings again immediately.

My heart beats faster. I can't tell if it's from still being angry with her or excitement that she finally called

I decide it’s both and answer the phone, irritated with myself.

I take my irritation out on her. “Gabby, I'm really not in the mood right now.”

She doesn't say hello. She doesn't say she's sorry. She doesn't tell me she misses me.

She says, “My father was just here. He’s escaped.”

Nathan McAllister should be in jail, not haunting Gabby's at night.

“We'll be right there,” I say. I hang then bring up Dustin's name. I hesitate to dial. He's hasn't slept, either. I could take the report alone.

I shake my head in disgust, knowing I secretly want to see Gabby alone. Want to give her the chance to apologize for putting herself in danger and messing up the ransom drop.

She didn't blow up that bridge, and she saved Anthony.

I push that thought away. She should have been home safe in bed not at the park in the first place. I told her not to come. She was home in bed but not safe when Nathan showed up.

She nearly blew herself up.

I push that thought away, too. My greatest fear.

Frustrated at my swirling emotions, I stab the screen of my phone and call Dustin.

He sounds like I woke him, but manages a slurred, “This better be important.”

“Gabby just called,” I start. I can practically hear his eyes roll.

“I don't need to be part of your relationship issues. We can talk about it in the morning.”

“It's not like that. And for the record, I don't need your help with relationships.”

“What did my trouble-causing sister want at four in the morning?”

“She said your father was at her house.”

“He's in jail awaiting trial.”

“Apparently we have an escapee in town. Meet me at her house.”

I toss off the blankets that have barely had time to warm and put on my uniform. We were allowed a few hours to rest before we were to report back in the morning. The few hours will have to wait.

I splash water on my face in an attempt to wake up. Some of it runs down the front collar of my shirt and ripples uncomfortably down my chest.

“Come on, Hartley, get it together,” I grumble. I grab a towel and dab it at my chest. I dry under my shirt as well as I can then toss the towel on the floor in anger.

I have to see her.

I'm not sure I want to. Not sure I can act professional and not want to kiss her, or talk some sense into her, or rail at her in anger.

Checking my reflection, my eyes are red and droopy and I need to shave. I search two drawers before I find the eye drops. I blink at the liquid's slight sting and consider a quick shave.
